radio station, closed / former military, United States Navy
The Clam Lake ELF radio transmitter site was composed of two ground dipole antennas, each 14 miles long, extending in four directions from the central transmitter site. This station transmitted ELF radio signals at a frequency of 76 Hz to communicate with submerged nuclear submarines around the world. The Clam Lake site was operational between 1985 and 2004 when it was replaced by higher frequency systems. The antennas and transmitter have since been removed. The second U.S. Navy ELF transmitter site is located outside of Republic, Michigan.
