Ex - USS Ticonderoga (CG 47) (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) | military, cruiser, United States Navy

USA / New Jersey / National Park / Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
 military, cruiser, United States Navy

USS Ticonderoga is the lead ship of her class of AEGIS Equipped Guided Missile Cruisers and commissioned into US Navy service in 1983. Originally designed to be a new class of Destroyer Leaders, she was built with MK 26 twin arm launchers mounted at the bow & stern, which while state of the art at the time, eventually limited her missile magazines and made her unable to launch large missles, such as the Tomahawk and the Standard SM-3 which require a VLS system.

The Ticonderoga was in service for only a year before she was involved in combat in Lebanon, operating in concert with USS New Jersey (BB-62) on naval gunfire support missions. In 1986 she was involved in the US Navy & US Air Force operations against Libya and by her 3rd birthday had fired over 100 missiles in anger, a feat that remains unmatched by any of her sisters. As part of the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) Battle Group she deployed in 1990 to the Persian Gulf in support of US Forces in the First Gulf War, and returned to the theatre again in 1995. In 1996 the end of the Cold War coupled with the Tico's limited offensive capabilities led to her being homeported at Pascagoula, MS and assigned to 'home waters' patrols for the balance of her service life. During this period though she made repeated deployments for excrcises with the Navies of South America before she was decommissioned in 2004 and placed into the Reserve Fleet here at NISMF Philadelphia.

Retained on donation hold to serve as a museum ship for over a decade and made the subject of a preservation effort by the city of Pascagoula, the Ticonderoga was subsequently withdrawn from donation hold and listed for scrap sale in June of 2014.
