McDonnell Douglas Aircraft / Harvey Aluminum Plant (former site) (Los Angeles, California)

USA / California / West Carson / Los Angeles, California
production, historical layer / disappeared object

Aerostructures plant that contained 2 of the six super sized extrusion presses built for the 1950's government Heavy Press Program to help build advanced structures for the aerospace industry. This facility contained one 8,000 ton and another 12,000 light alloy extrusion press. Unfortunately the 12,000 ton press was cut up for scrap in the 1990's and the 8000 ton press may have been sold to Korea or China.

  • My grandfather worked here for 27 years ending in 1987.
  • There may have been some Douglas Aircraft production in this area, but the main assembly plant for McDonald Douglas was adjacent to the Long Beach Airport, on the north side. There also was an older Douglas plant (The original one, in fact) at the Santa Monica Airport. The major industrial facility at THIS site was ther "Harvey Aluminum" plant.
  • I was never entirely certain what my grandfathers job was, even though he took me on open houses through the plant at various times. He took me through the Long Beach plant once and I think I've read about the old Santa Monica plant once.
  • Yes,this used to be a Douglas Aircraft Plant. This was their sub-assembly area, where they built the F4D Skyray in the 1950s,because the El Segundo Production Plant would be too full some times.
