Large oil refinery. This was Standard Oil's second plant in California, the first being up north at Richmond. This plant actually provided the name for the city of El Segundo, ("the Second" en Espanol) which was a "company town" in the truest sense. Until the 1950s Standard Oil even paid their workers in scrip rather than dollars.

  • Although you are right in saying that generally the correct way to pronounce El Segundo is El Se-gun-doe, it is also correct to say that the main reason for this is the Anglo American custom of mispronouncing proper Spanish words. If Se-gun-doe is right, then we should call Los Angeles, Los An-ge-lees, and tortillas, Tor-ti-las, and not Tor-ti-yas. Anyways, it is a loser's fight to argue which party is right and which is wrong, but I can say that it is narrow minded and a bit ignorant to say that only one way is correct. I believe both are acceptable, and that when it comes down to it, El Se-gun-doe is the more common way, while El Se-goon-do is the more authentic and accurate way.
