  • It's rather haunting to see a place that you lived in as a child, disappear from the scene! Like many military buildings of the time, the PMQs and other buildings were clad in white painted, baked asbestos shingles. They were very brittle and broke easily if hit with something like a stone. The ceilings of the buildings began to leak during the early 60s from the water of melted snow and they had to have an entire new layer of gravel and tar laid down on the flat rooftops. They were built by the 7099th battalion, 78th task force, United States Army Corps of Engineers. My father worked for the Defence Research Board of Canada and that accounted for the presence of our family at Ft. Churchill.
