The town was founded in 1875 as a fur trading post and a Northwest Mounted Police outpost. From 1876 to 1883, Battleford was the capital of the Northwest Territories, until it was transferred to Regina. Today it is a town of about 3800 people; it and the city of North Battleford are known collectively as "The Battlefords".
