An important saline lake, a National Bird Sanctuary since 1915, and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The biosphere reserve consists of three areas - the core area of the lake itself, a Buffer Zone that includes the lands within a km of the lake, and a Transition Zone that includes the lake's drainage basin, extending about 10 km to the south and west and 30 km to the north. The lake houses the largest known breeding concentration of White-Winged Scoters, one of the world's largest colonies of White Pelicans, is on the Whooping Crane migration route, and is a nesting ground for the threatened Piping Plover. In drought years when neighbouring shallow lakes are dry, Redberry also becomes a critical staging point for the fall migration.
