Set apart from public domain in 1866. Designated in honor of Admiral John L. Worden, US Navy, captain of the U.S.S. Monitor during its battle with the C.S.S. Virginia in Hampton Roads, VA, in 1862.
Fort Worden, north of Port Townsend, was a 20th Century Fort, one of the "triangle of fire" gun emplacements. Now it's a 422 acre state park, with camp grounds, playing fields, hiking trails, conference facilities, boat ramps, beaches, a lighthouse, performance spaces, a marine science center, a museum and more. A leisurely hike around the old concrete bunkers on the hill is a bit mysterious. Especially during the summer, the Centrum Organization organizes many performing arts and learning activities, including a jazz, blues, and fiddling festivals. The Victorian barracks are made available for all kinds of events and residential learning experiences. And a tidbit for movie fans, "An Officer and a Gentleman," has many scenes that were filmed on the grounds (and in the surrounding Port Townsend area).
Formerly home to the Headquarters, Harbor Defenses of Puget Sound from 1919 to 1941, the Headquarters, 14th Coast Artillery Regiment from 1924 to 1941, the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th Companies, Coast Defenses of Puget Sound from 1919 to 1922, the 106th and 108th Coast Artillery Companies from 1922 to 1924 the 1st Battalion, 14th Coast Artillery from 1924 to 1941, and the 3d Battalion, 14th Coast Artillery from 1924 to 1935 and 1941.
