Distant Island is one of hundreds of what are called the Sea Islands along the coast of South Carolina. Composed of 185 acres of high ground, Distant Island is surrounded almost entirely by tidal water as deep as 26 feet at low tide. It is connected by a paved causeway to Ladys Island, from which one reaches the historic town of Beaufort over the Ladys Island bridge. Historically Distant Island was very rich farmland. Since 1976 it has been under development as a high-end private residential community that is now within the city limits of Beaufort.
