The Daufuskie Island is the barrier island referred as the "Yamacraw Island" in the 1972 "The Water is Wide" memoir of Pat Conroy, a young white teacher who was sent to Yamacraw island to teach children who were coming from poor black families. This novel was adopted in the "Conrack" motion picture, starring John Voight and Madge Sinclair in 1973.
