  • Tihu, a river, a Bodo word means a river having shape like pitcher in the boundary of Nalbari and Barpeta districts. The place Tihu is a town and the name rests after this river. A semantic change from river name to town cf. Demow to Demow Town in upper Assam. This region was a part of ancient Kampitha, Pagarjotic, Pragjyotisha, Kamarupa, Paralauhitya, Lohiccha, Lauhityadesha, etc and ruled by king Mahiranga, Sambarasura, Ratnasura, Naraka, Pushyavaramana and several Varmana kings including Kumar Bhaskara Varmana. This area also ruled by the Bhuyan chief Durlabhanarayana, Gadadhara, Chandibara etc. The Tai-Ahom rulers since the days of Siuhungmung commanded this area. The legendary story of King Jarsandha and Lord Hari connected with nearby Tihu such as "Haribhanga" means the place, where Lord Hari was defeated in the hand of King Jarasandha. Tihu is growth center today.
