Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary is named after one of the most endangered primates called Hoolock Gibbon, the only Ape found in India. This sanctuary is more than 22 sq. kms and has the highest concentration of these animal species in the world. It is a unique sanctuary of an isolated forest surrounded by tea gardens and human settlements. Declared a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1997.

Apart from its prime inhabitant, wildlife include Elephant, Leopard, Tiger, Pangolin, Assamese macaque, Pig tailed macaque, Rhesus macaque, Stump tailed macaque, Capped langur, Slow loris, Jungle cat, Indian civet, Giant squirrel, Barking deer, Sambar, Wild pig, Squirrels etc. Over 200 species of birds have been recorded including the endangered White-winged Wood Duck.

The sanctuary is connected by road from Jorhat city (20kms) and Mariani town (5kms). Nearest airport is at Jorhat.

  • I visited the reserve in March 2014 and had several sightings of gibbons, including a male, female and young. We also saw giant squirrels and capped langurs. It is a fine reserve and I enjoyed visiting it.
