On this site a grist mill existed until some time after 1890. The last owner / operator was Arnold Fleet. On Long Island "undershot" mills greatly outnumbered windmills testifying to the skills of the millers, such as Arnold Fleet. Operating in the 1870s, it turned 60 pounds of wheat into 42.5 pounds of superfine flour, 2 pounds of third grade flour, 8.8 pounds of bran, and 1.2 pounds of waste.
