Built in 1971, the Wastewater Treatment Plant treats all municipal wastewater before returning it to the South Saskatchewan River. Originally designed by Gore & Storrie and Stanley Associates Engineering, many of the buildings have a tindlestone exterior. In 1996, a $52 million expansion included the addition of a Biological Nutrient Removal (BNR) processing facility. The BNR was the largest newly constructed system of its kind in North America at the time of its construction.
