Former Institute of Pennsylvania Hospital, called the "Pennsylvania Hospital for the Insane," the hospital was opened in 1841, the first of the so-called "Kirkbride Plan" hospitals, named for Dr. Thomas Story Kirkbride, the hospital’s first chief physician. The plan developed by Dr. Kirkbride stressed sunlight, ventilation, exercise, and privacy for patients.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966.

The hospital remained opened until 1997 and is now operated as a private psychiatric care facility. Some of the remaining hospital buildings now serve social service functions.
