Valley Flyover (abandoned) (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)

USA / Pennsylvania / Millbourne / Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
railway, abandoned / shut down, bridge, railway bridge

This landmark truss bridge on the old PRR Main Line in West Philadelphia was built to carry express passenger trains from New York up and over the old Belmont Freight yards and down onto the outer passenger tracks.

When the Overbrook Maintenance Facility opened to replace the Paoli Shops, the old 4 track was re-aligned and the only user of the flyover became R6 Cynwyd trains running on the old PRR Schuylkill Valley Branch.

No longer a part of Main Line operations, the Valley Flyover has been been allowed to deteriorate to the point where there is a 5-15mph speed restriction on the truss structure. No longer necessary due to the closing of the Belmont freight yards it was designed to bypass, the Cynwyd Line was realigned onto a disused freight right-of-way parallel to the bridge in early 2018, leaving the bridge and its approaches abandoned and disconnected.
