FOX-5 Radar Site

Canada / Nunavut / Pangnirtung /
 military, early warning radar

Built in 1956-57 as an Auxiliary DEW Line site and equipped with a short range radar system to bolster airspace coverage, the FOX-5 site (AKA Site 39 or Broughton Island) occupied some 15,000+ acres of Qikiqtarjuaq Island. Located roughly 6.5 miles from its airstrip and port facility and situated on highlands overlooking open water, FOX-5 was manned by personnel of the Royal Canadian Air Force until it ceased DEW Line operations in 1991.

Co-located with a modern North Warning System site starting in 1990, the entire of the DEW-era radar facilities were razed following the end of the Cold War, with only the concrete foundations for the communication tower and toposcatter radars still visible. With the ownership of the airstrip transferred to the village of Qikiqtarjuaq, the site today operates autonomously with an AN/FPS-124 short-range radar and is primarily resupplied and maintained by helicopter.
