Fort Garrott (Vicksburg, Mississippi)

USA / Mississippi / Vicksburg / Vicksburg, Mississippi

Fort Garrott was named after the courageous commander of the 20th Alabama Volunteer Infantry, Col. Isham W. Garrott. The 20th Alabama was one of the regiments that garrisoned the fort which, like all other Southern positions, was subjected to the sniping of Federal sharpshooters. One day, Garrott, frustrated over conditions in the fort, particularly the annoying sharpshooters, decided to return the compliment. He obtained a musket and prepared a return a sharpshooter's fire when, instead Garrott was hit and killed by a Union minie ball. He died without learning that he had been promoted to the rank of Brigadier General.
