temple, sanctuary, archaeological site, stonemasonry
The ruined sanctuary of Hera in the area of ancient Prosymna (mentioned by Pausanias and not to be confused with the modern village of that name across the mountains to the northeast). The sanctuary was of regional importance and contained a temple of Hera (rebuilt after the old temple burned down in 423 BC) and various associated structures, including arcades and a Roman bath. The Heraion is supposed to have been the place where Agamemnon was chosen to lead the Argives against Troy. Nevertheless, the earliest excavated remains date to the Geometric Period. Apart from the Roman baths, most of the remains are Archaic and Classical.
