The Birmingham Wholesale Markets were constructed on this site in the 1970s, adjacent to the Bull Ring Markets. The markets replaced various other, older markets on the site and their construction unearthed the remains of the ancient manor of the de Birmingham family, who previously ruled the town. The markets were demolished in 2018 and relocated to the Witton area of Birmingham. The site is set for redevelopment as a complex known as Smithfield, btu currently sits vacant.
