A large surburban town and a major district centre in South London, currently with ambitious regeneration plans to make it 'London's Third City'. It is the principal settlement in the London Borough of Croydon which has the largest population of all the London Boroughs.
Historically Croydon was in Surrey and developed into the largest town in the county with the arrival of the London & Croydon Railway (later joining with another company to make the Brighton Main Line). In 1967 Croydon became part of Greater London but continued to be developed rapidly into a large business and commerical centre. Later the Tramlink was developed in the area.
These days some developments from the '60s haven't always worked out such as the large dual-carriageway which bisects the town centre, so the Croydon Vision for 2020 has plans for dramatic changes to the town centre to improve its image and importance. Already, Croydon is the largest Town Centre in Greater London after central London itself.
