Patriarchal Monastery of the Holy Trinity

Bulgaria / Veliko Tarnovo /
nunnery, Medieval / Middle Ages, interesting place, Bulgarian Orthodox Church

The "Holy Trinity" Patriarchal Monastery is located in an extremely beautiful area at the foot of the picturesque Arbanasi Plateau, about 6 km from the ancient Bulgarian capital Veliko Tarnovo and 1.5 km from the village of Samovodene.
The Patriarchal Monastery of the Holy Trinity is located 6 km north of Veliko Tarnovo Town. It is situated in a beautiful area at the foot of an inaccessible rock.
According to some sources, the Holy Trinity Monastery was founded in 1070. Other theories claim that the monastery was founded most likely by Patriarch Evtimiy (1325 – 1403) with the help of Tsar Ivan Shishman (who reigned in the period 1371 – 1395), and thus it got the names Patriarch’s Monastery and Shishman’s Monastery.
The monastery was the centre of Tarnovo Literary School when Evtimiy was hegumen there. The monastery continued to flourish even after 1375 when Evtimiy was elected Patriarch.
In the 18th and early 19th century, the monastery received substantial donations from the rulers of Wallachia and Moldavia (the Romanian principalities across the Danube). Charters by Ştefan Cantacuzino (1715), Grigore II Ghica (1748), Alexander Ypsilantis (1776) and Constantine Ypsilantis (1803) have been preserved, and there is direct evidence of donations by earlier voivodes like Matei Basarab of Wallachia (1632 – 1654).
