This site was once owned by the US Navy and was designated Naval Research Laboratory, Underwater Sound Reference Detachment, Orlando, Florida, where sonar was tested in the deep waters of Lake Gem Mary. The building has some walls that are 12-18 inch thick.

It was never part of the Naval Training Center, Orlando. It opened in 1951 and closed in 1997 as part of BRAC 1995. Later excavation showed that it is sited on part of what was Fort Gatlin.
