In 1917, the Holzwarths established their homestead claim. In 1919, the Holzwarth Ranch began operations as a guest ranch. There are a number of guest cabins, a taxidermy shop, a wood shed, and an icehouse that were constructed in the years between circa 1902 and 1944. Most were designed by J. Holzwarth. In 1974, the homestead was purchased by the Nature Conservancy, and in 1975 ownership was transferred to the National Park Service. The 72-acre district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) for its significance in the areas of entertainment/recreation, exploration/settlement, and agriculture.
