A Spanish military post named in honor of the Count of Monterey. Garrisoned during the Civil War, then abandoned. Reoccupied in 1902 and reconstructed. Designated Camp
Ord in 1903. Redesignated the Presidio of Monterey in 1904.

This is where the Armed Forces send their members, both new recruits and higher enlisted or officers to learn one of more than a dozen possible languages, most popular of which being Arabic, Korean and Russian. Other government agencies send people there occasionally to learn languages, and for a price, a civilian can also learn.

Formerly home to the Headquarters, 76th Field Artillery from 1940 to 1941, the 11th Cavalry from 1919 to 1941, and the 2nd Battalion, 76th Field Artillery from 1922 to 1941.
