The sudden decrease in altitude and congested space makes it impossible to lengthen the track to cover the gradiant. Thus the track makes a loop and passes below itself in this loop. This is the only loop of its kind in the world. Brazil has a similar loop on road.
Leaving Ghum the toy train descends towards Darjeeling. On the way the train passes through Batasia Loop with its memorial to the Gorkha soldiers. From the Batasia Loop you can get a spectacular view of Darjeeling town with the Kanchenjunga and other snowy mountains in the back-drop.
