Fort DeRussy was an earthen fort built in 1862 to protect the Red River from Union interference.It was built and named after Colonel Lewis G. DeRussy of Natchitoches,the oldest West Point graduate to fight for the South.DeRussy a prominent engineer and veteran of the War of 1812 and the Mexican War,was engineering officer in charge of its construction.Fort DeRussy was the site of three major Civil War battles.
