In the late 1990's The Raceway on Belle Isle expanded the length of its straightaway between turns 2 and 3 to allow for faster speeds and more passing. This change only lasted a few years as the race left the island only to return in 2007 on the ALMS and IRL series schedules in the raceways original configuration. The short chute can still be seen in the imaging (as of Jan 15, 2008) it is covered over with sod when it was not being used. You can still see the rumble strips leading into and out of the corners making this section of the old course. Because this section of the course was actually below grade it would flood out completely across the surface turning the track into a skidpad in the event of rain.

This section left the current track configuration at the entrance to turn 3 and rejoined at the present day turn 6.

This part of the track has been reinstated as of the 2013 race.
