Large Mental Hospital and grounds, established 1934 as the East Ham and Southend-on-Sea Boroughs Joint Mental Hospital. Architects were Charles Ernest Elcock and Frederick Sutcliffe, of London.
The famous and controversial Corsellis Collection, Britain's first and foremost collection of brain samples, was founded here in 1950, initially using deceased patient's brains.
The hospital has been running into closure with wards closing gradually over a period of about ten years. Final closure and shutdown of Runwell Hospital occurred on 23 April 2010.
