Danbury Common is one of the largest areas of heathland remaining in Essex and shows various stages in the succession from open heath, through bracken and gorse scrub, to birch and oakwoodland.

It is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and majority of the site is Common Land owned by the National Trust. The SSSI includes two nature reserves managed by the Essex Naturalists' Trust: the Backwarden, which is part of the Common, and Hitchcock's Meadows, which adjoin its eastern boundary.
