A c. 1908 subdivision, originally named "University Park." Across Rengstorff Avenue (then called Pastoria Avenue) was the Castro Station - a Southern Pacific Station which closed in 1998. The neighborhood was supposed to serve as a country home for San Franciscans and Stanford Professors (hence its name and street names; Leland, Stanford, University). However the subdivision largely failed and it was not until the 1930s when many Mexican-American families moved into the neighborhood that it was fully developed.
