Formerly the site of the old East German Ministry of Health, which was demolished in 2007-2008 so that the Tryp Berlin Mitte hotel could be built. The Tryp chain eventually pulled out and used that name for another hotel elsewhere in the city. The hotel was then planned as the Hotel Barcelona. However the construction plans fell through completely after the banks involved refused to lend the necessary money following the 2008 economic collapse, saying the Berlin hotel market was over-saturated. The hotel was finally built, largely to the original plans, but after a construction pause lasting a decade, and opened in 2017 as the Motel One Berlin-Alexanderplatz
