Opened by the Chilika Development Authority (CDA) in October 1999. The new sea mouth was opened to prevent Chilika from shifting from a brackish water to a fresh water ecosystem and to increase fish catch. The opening has been controversial and its effectiveness has been disputed.

Comments

  • good attempt to save the ecology of the lagoon
  • i agree that the sea mouth has been controversial, but sadly there is not enough unbiased information to show the discrepancies. Also, there is no data showing that the fish catch increase if at all, is mostly due to illegal shrimp farming
  • this eco village developed by villagers and local NGO ISERD and PREPARE for the economic developkent of Sipkuda villagers
  • Hope CDA take good care of the lake to bring in more salty water to balance the inland drainage of the rivers, which will consequently destroy the eco system. There is a need to open up another mouth toward south of the lake.
