Biertan first documentary mention in 1283, along with other 7 villages inhabited at the time by Saxons in a document required by the Catholic Capital Tax in Alba Iulia to Catholic priests from Saxon communities.
Biertan was the seat of the Diocese of the Evangelical between 1572 and 1867.
The central building of the ensemble is a hall-church with three naves, network vaults, built between 1492-1516 on the site of an older Romanesque bazilica. The church is built in the late Gothic style with elements of Renaissance architecture in some portals. The church is the last edifice of this kind - church hall - built in Transylvania.
