The Fortress of Arad was built by the order of the Austrian Empress Maria Theresa Habsburg after the plans of the Austrian general and architect Fillip Ferdinand Harsch. The construction took 30 years, from 1763 until 1783. This building is the most advanced variant of the Vauban-type fortifications. The buildings inside the fortress are built in baroque style. It used to be a military base for Austrian Imperial Army, Romanian Royal Army, Wermacht. Soviet Red Army was stationed in here ‘til 1957.

  • Fact: The Romanian authorities have kept the Statue of Liberty in this statue fir many years -- until it got "liberated" in 2002. However, the Romanian authorities designated a different place for it (not the original). A crime against humanity!
