Fortress of Arad (Arad)

citadel, fortification, cultural heritage / national heritage, draw only border

The Fortress of Arad was built by order of the Austrian Empress Maria Theresa Habsburg after the plans of the Austrian general and architect Filip Ferdinand Harsch.
The construction took 30 years, from 1763 until 1783.
This building is the most advanced variant of the Vauban-type fortifications. The buildings inside the fortress are built in baroque style. It used to be a military base for the Austrian Imperial Army, the Romanian Royal Army, and the Wehrmacht. Soviet Red Army was stationed in here ‘til 1957. Unfortunately it is still a Romanian Army base. If you're not conscripted, this is the only way you can see it. Airborne or from satellite . . .
