Bletchley

United Kingdom / England / Bletchley /

The largest existing place which was amalgamated into the new town of Mitlon Keynes. Unlike Milton Keynes, it has grown in a standard piecemeal way and does not have the grid layout. It is home to Bletchley Park, a large stately home where the first computer was used to crack the Enigma during WWII.

  • Bletchley is my home town. It has the Brunel Shopping Centre named after the famous engineer who brought the railway to Bletchley, as the town used to be a well known railway junction between London - Birmingham & Oxford - Cambridge lines. The Oxford to Cambridge line closed in the 1960's, but now only consists of the Bletchley to Bedford branch line. The town is split into the area's Fenny Stratford to the East, with Old & Far Bletchley to the West. The main shopping street in The Queensway, formerly The High Street but renamed after Queen Elizabeth II came through the town in 1953. Most of the older generation from the town do not associate Bletchley as being part of Milton Keynes, and still refer to it as simply Bletchley, Buckinghamshire.
