54-acre island most notable as having been a Civil War prisoner of war camp. The island also contained factories and an iron works, and also had a functioning hydroelectric plant that fueled city trams until they were decommissioned around 1950. The entire island is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Today, the island is a great place for rock climbing, mountain biking, kayaking, and history tours. It hosts the only downtown mountain biking tournament (Xterra Challenge) and the only Class IV rapids inside a metropolitan area in America.
