Maymont was the 100 acre Gilded Age estate of a prominent Richmond couple, James and Sallie Dooley. Their 33-room Victorian mansion was completed in 1893, and was followed by the addition of Italian and Japanese gardens, a 45-foot waterfall and numerous outbuildings. Other features added over the years include a Nature Center, Children's Farm, Native Virginia animal exhibits, antique carriages and more.

The private, nonprofit Maymont Foundation has operated the property since 1975, and offers membership and donor opportunities which help with restoration projects and animal care. Weddings, corporate events and group tours are available by reservation. The property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
