Schinkelplatz (Berlin)

Germany / Berlin / Berlin
 square, park

Historical square in Berlin. It is named after Karl Friedrich Schinkel, a prominent German architect. Schinkel designed many of the neoclassicist buildings in Berlin, among them the Neue Wache, the Altes Museum and Konzerthaus on the Gendarmenmarkt.
During the GDR era this square was the location for a modernist building of the East German Ministry of Foreign Affairs (German: Ministerium für Auswärtige Angelegenheiten). The building was destroyed in 1996 and the area became a square again.
