Canada / British Columbia / Vancouver
 park, cenotaph

Park on Commercial Drive in Vancouver with a cenotaph. Small, right beside Commercial Drive, with a reasonably-clean public washroom. Bus stops very near. Food and coffee shops on Commercial. Good bakery nearby, library and swimming pool in the Community Centre, not many bars or pubs. Great place to take a break while exploring Commercial Drive. Not many tourists, even in summertime.

  • Yuppies are attempting to gentrify the park, that they never use, but want as a property-enhancing amenity. Used by a wide range of people, including drug users, children, the unemployed, the down-and-out, lesbians, festival goers, homosexuals, celebrants.
  • During the day (especially on weekends), the park is ruled by throngs of kids playing on the playground. At night, however, the drug users, unemployed and those who just don't give a damn about the neighborhood come by to thrash it. The only gentrification going on here is the people who actually walk by and pick up the trash. Frankly, I'm not sure what's wrong with the idea that people are moving into this neighborhood and have started to repair the buildings that are falling over. If people took care of their surroundings, this neighborhood would be one of the nicer ones in Vancouver.
  • Tennis courts in southwest corner turned by Visionistas on City Council into unused Bicycle Polo ground. They are chopping most of the shrubbery to the police can see from their patrol cars. The big 100-year-old trees are coming down at a greater rate than planting any 10-year-old replacements.
