In June 2002, Wakes Cove Provincial Park was created. The park is named for British retired naval Captain Baldwin Wake who purchased land in the area in 1876. The land continued to be owned by his descendants until the 1920's. Captain Wake went missing while sailing his sloop. Remains of his boat and belongings washed up on Thetis Island, but his body was never recovered.
The British Columbia Government purchased the 132 hectare property at Wakes Cove for $4.12 million, with $100,000 coming from the Marine Parks Forever Society. The new provincial park includes another 73 hectares of Crown foreshore on Valdes Island.
