P'yŏngyang University of Mechanical Engineering was founded in September 1959 as part of a resolution at the Fourth Plenum meeting of the DPRK Cabinet 2 March 1959 that instigated the creation of specialized technical universities. There are 19 faculties, 60 academic tracks and 50 department chairs specializing in heavy and light machinery and specialized research for the government of the DPRK.
