The intersection of 8 Mile Road (east-west) and Livernois Avenue (north-south) is the location of the first "Michigan left" traffic arrangement, piloted by the Michigan Department of Transportation in the early 1960s. The increase in traffic flow and reduction in accidents was so dramatic that over 700 similar intersections have been deployed throughout the state since then.
Left turns from Livernois avenue onto 8 Mile Road are prohibited. Instead, a motorist on Livernois first turns right, merges into the left lane, then makes a U-turn at the provided U-turn lane.
