Metropolitan Cathedral of Craiova is dedicated to St Demetrius, who is also the saint patron of Craiova.
Founded by the Craioveşti boyars, first documented confirmation in 1645 aa the Royal Church of Craiova.
With the support of King Charles I and Queen Elizabeth, was rebuilt from scratch by architect Andre Lecomte de Nouy, ​​between 1889-1893. The consecration took place on 16 October 1893, with very fast under the pastorates of Râmnic Bishop-Bartolomei.
The church houses the relics of St. Hierarch St. Niphon, Patriarch of Constantinople, of Saints Sergius and Vah and of the Holy Martyr Tatiana.
in 1939, the church of St. Demetrius becomes Metropolitan Cathedral Mitropolitană.
