Tsikhisjvari – from Georgian “tsikhi” (ციხისჯვარი)– fortress and “jvari” – cross.
This is a Pontian Greek village that has been mostly abandoned by its Greek population during the instability period in Georgia that followed the collapse of the Soviet Union. Greek Pontian dialect was widely spoken in this village. The refuges from Tsikhisjvari (tsikhijvarlides) mostly settled in Thessaloniki, Northern Greece.
