Constructed in 1884 at a cost of only $1752.00 Division Street School is one of the oldest extant segregated schools in Indiana. Thousands of African-American elementary students were educated here before its closure in 1946. In danger of being demolished in the 1990's, Division Street School was saved and has now been restored thanks to the efforts of the Friends of Division Street School, Inc., the New Albany-Floyd County Consolidated School Corporation and the financial support of the Caesar's Foundation and others.
