The site on which the Kelly Senior Center now stands was formerly occupied by Nike battery M-20 between 1955 and 1960. At the time the location was called the Grant Park Nike Site, located on 40 acres along the lakeshore. This site was part of a chain of eight missile sites constructed to guard the Milwaukee Metropolitan area. The Nike missiles were publicized as guided missiles able to destroy any combat aircraft in operation as of 1955. These weapons were briefly replaced by Nike Hercules missiles which brought nuclear warheads to the site. The missiles were poised and ready to protect Milwaukeeans in case of enemy attack during the Cold War. The army pulled out of the site in 1968. The Kelly Senior Center was opened on the grounds in 1975 and occupies the former radar and crew quarters.

  • This site is very far from its purported location. This is in Lake Park in the City of Milwaukee. I've begun labeling some of the old buildings down in the Warnimont/Grant Park area that were part of the old M-42 Nike Site down in Cudahy/South Milwaukee area.
  • Doing some digging I found this newspaper article that references a radar site on the bluffs of Lake Park that served the Nike battery in the former Maitland park area that is now the Summerfest grounds. http://www.flickr.com/photos/ericapp/4231361879/in/pool-1607871@N22/
