The Monument to the Unknown Hero (Serbian: Споменик Незнаном јунаку) is located atop Mt. Avala in Serbia, south-east of the capital, Belgrade, and was designed by the Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović. Memorial was built 1938. on the location of Žrnov fortress.
The construction of this monument was ordered by King Alexander I of Yugoslavia to commemorate the victims of World War I. Marked only by the dates 1912-1918, the monument also commemorates those lost in the Balkan Wars (1912-1913).
