The city lies at the confluence of the two rivers, Sava and the Danube. Belgrade has 1.7 million inhabitants (according to 2002. census). The city is the political, cultural and economic metropolis of Serbia. It is one of the oldest cities in Europe and next to Athens and Bucharest is the largest urban unit in the Balkans. The oldest archaeological finds on its territory rich in the 5th Millennium BC. Celtic tribes founded Singidun in 3rd Century BC, the city was 878. with the name of Belgrade for the first time mentioned.
